CEREC Crowns Vs Traditional Crowns

Dental crowns are “caps” that are placed over chipped, cracked, damaged or weak teeth. They can also be used to cover dental implants or as anchors for dental bridges. While traditional and CEREC crowns both last for about 15 years and have similar costs, CEREC crowns offer a much more convenient method of restoring damaged teeth.

Requiring only one dental appointment lasting for about 2 hours, these crowns significantly reduce the waiting period, tooth sensitivity, and other costs related to appointments and commute. The biggest distinction between traditional crowns and CEREC crowns is that CEREC crowns are designed and created in a short period using computer technology.

Traditional crowns require physical impressions to be taken of the teeth, sent to a lab, and then a mold is created, fitted, and cemented in the mouth. This process can take weeks rather than 2 hours.

What is a Traditional Dental Crown?

Traditional dental crowns can be made of various materials, including porcelain, composite resin, metal alloys, or some other combination. They are used in restorative dentistry as caps over damaged teeth or teeth at risk for breaking or cracking such as after a root canal.

The process of getting a traditional dental implant installed takes multiple appointments spanning a few weeks. The first step is to examine your teeth and prepare them for the dental crown application. This may consist of grinding down the natural tooth so the crown can fit over it and match the size of the rest of your teeth. You will be given an anesthetic so you don’t feel pain.

Scans will be taken of your mouth and impressions taken of your teeth. These are sent to a dental lab so a mold can be constructed to match the size and shape of your teeth. While your permanent crown is being designed, you will be given a temporary crown to cover the affected tooth.

Once you return for your second appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and your tooth will be cleaned. Then, it’s time to check the fit of your permanent crown. If all is well, then it will be cemented into place. Overall, this process can take 2-3 weeks.

What is a CEREC Dental Crown?

A CEREC dental crown is an innovation in dentistry. It is similar to traditional crowns in lifespan and function but differs in some significant ways. A CEREC dental crown is a same-day dental crown. As the name suggests, these crowns are created and installed all in one appointment.

Your dentist can design and create your tooth on the spot with the use of computer technology. A camera is used to create a 3D impression of your teeth. A ceramic crown is then created with a milling unit, followed by painting and glazing your tooth.

CEREC dental crowns are made of different materials than traditional crowns. To create a more aesthetic and natural-looking tooth that blends in with your real teeth, the crown is constructed with ceramic or resin.

How Are CEREC Crowns More Convenient?

The use of 3D technology allows the dentist to create the perfect match to your tooth color and the precision allows for an even more comfortable fit than traditional crowns. The biggest advantages of CEREC dental crowns include:

  • Just one appointment is necessary
  • There is no need to wear a temporary crown
  • Everything is completed within 2 hours
  • The materials the crown is made of look more natural
  • The crown is more comfortable
  • A better bite can be achieved with 3D technology
  • They last just as long as traditional crowns
  • About the same price as traditional crowns
  • Restore immediate function of your teeth
