Take-Home Vs. In-Office Whitening

We offer both in-office and take-home whitening. In-office whitening is done by Dr. Bickel at our office, and is the best way to get fast results for a special occasion. If you want to get a brighter smile quickly, it’s your best option.

Take-home whitening takes a few weeks to deliver results, but is more subtle and lets you treat yourself in the comfort of your own home. If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth more gradually and avoid spending too much time in the dentist’s chair, it’s a good option.

The Teeth Whitening Process

In-office whitening consists of one or more appointments with Dr. Bickel. He will clean your mouth, apply a protective gel to your gums, then apply a whitening compound to your teeth, and activate it with a UV light. This process may be repeated several times, depending on your desired level of whiteness.

Take-home whitening is a bit different. You’ll come into our office, and Dr. Bickel will take impressions of your teeth with dental putty. These will be used to make a set of reusable, custom whitening trays. You’ll come back in a few weeks to pick up your whitening trays, and to get a set of whitening products and instructions on how to use them. Then, just follow the instructions to whiten your teeth at home.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Teeth whitening can last for anywhere from 1-3 years, depending on how you care for your teeth. Make sure you brush twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, and see Dr. Bickel for regular six-month teeth cleanings.

In addition, you can take steps to prevent further staining, such as reducing your intake of beverages like wine, coffee, and tea, or drinking them with a straw to prevent contact with your teeth. Brushing with a whitening toothpaste and using whitening mouthwash can also help prevent and reverse minor stain buildup.

If your teeth do develop stains in the future, a touch-up appointment at our office can remove them and keep your teeth bright.

Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

No. Your teeth may feel a little bit sore or sensitive when undergoing treatment, but you won’t feel any serious pain or discomfort. Once your teeth have been whitened, this sensitivity will go away within a few days.

However, if you already have sensitive teeth, discuss this with Dr. Bickel before your treatment. He may need to adjust your treatment to ensure that you will remain comfortable and free of discomfort while your teeth are whitened.

Is Teeth Whitening Good for My Teeth?

It’s normal to have concerns about your teeth's health and structural integrity should you whiten them. You’d be glad to know that teeth whitening is perfectly safe and actually beneficial for patients of all ages. There are a couple of minor side effects, but nothing enough to compromise your teeth’s health. For instance, some patients may experience gum sensitivity after teeth whitening that disappears within hours or days.

Teeth whitening is good for your teeth in the sense that it eliminates stains and discoloration for a beautiful, brighter smile. An improved smile can boost confidence, allowing you to face the world more confidently and seize opportunities whenever they arise, thus improving your quality of life. Teeth whitening is also a non-invasive treatment that doesn't involve any drilling or making incisions on the gum tissue.

Dentists typically thoroughly examine your oral cavity before whitening your teeth. This provides an opportunity to identify underlying dental complications for prompt treatment before they get out of hand. That way, you can have strong, healthy teeth and save a bundle in future dental costs.

How Can I Permanently Whiten My Teeth?

Unfortunately, there is no permanent solution for teeth whitening./ All the available teeth whitening techniques are temporary and require follow-up visits to maintain the teeth’s white appearance. However, you can prolong how long your teeth whitening lasts by embracing proper oral hygiene habits and using the right teeth whitening techniques.

For instance, in-house teeth whitening by a professional dentist usually lasts for six months to 3 years, depending on how you take care of your teeth. This is much better than store-bought teeth whitening gels and strips that only last for a month or two with mostly underwhelming results. That said, your professional teeth whitening can also last a few months if you don’t practice proper oral hygiene.

You should also steer clear of tobacco and pigmented drinks that accelerate the staining of your whitened teeth. Be sure to brush your teeth regularly and use a straw when necessary to prevent pigmented drinks from directly contacting your teeth.

What Is the Healthiest and Fastest Way to Whiten Teeth?

The healthiest and fastest way to whiten teeth is in-house teeth bleaching by a licensed dentist. The dentist will take extra precautions to ensure the health of your teeth, and the process only takes 60 to 90 minutes per session. The results almost always meet the patient’s expectations, except in cases where the patient also suffers from tooth decay.

During in-house teeth whitening, the dentist will first examine your teeth and address any underlying conditions you may have. The dentist then uses a protective barrier to shield your gums and lips from the whitening agent. The dentist then applies the bleaching agent on your teeth and activates it with a special blue light. They repeat the process until all the stains disappear and your teeth are white and spotless.
