Having Sinus Problems After A Root Canal? Here’s What to Know!
October 18, 2018

Sinus problems after a root canal are actually quite common, if one of your upper teeth is treated during root canal therapy. Most of the time, a few minor sinus problems are not a concern.
But in some cases, you may experience more severe sinus problems after root canal therapy. The team at Redmond Art of Dentistry wants you to know what to do about post-root canal sinus problems. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
How Are Root Canals Related To Sinuses?
The roots of the upper teeth are actually quite close to the sinus membrane, which is very thin and delicate. During the process of a root canal, specialized tools are used to scrape away infected tooth pulp.
In some cases, one of these tools may puncture the sinus membrane during a root canal. This is called a “sinus communication” and it’s nothing to worry about. It will heal on its own in just a few days.
What Symptoms Might I Experience After A Root Canal?
Some of the most common symptoms that you will experience after having a root canal are:
- Sinus pressure and congestion
- Symptoms that are similar to allergies or the common cold, e.g. stuffiness, runny nose, post-nasal drip
- A chemical taste in your throat or nose. This indicates the drainage of the sodium hypochlorite that’s used to disinfect the root of your tooth during root canal therapy.
In most cases, these symptoms will resolve themselves after just a few days, and they are nothing to worry about. Ensuring you follow aftercare procedures and avoid smoking after your root canal will assist with the healing process.
When Should I See A Dentist If I’m Having Sinus Problems?
Not all sinus problems are minor. If your dentist is careless or inexperienced, they may create a larger sinus puncture that can’t heal on its own, and this can require stitches to close. And if they fail to remove the root of the infection, a number of other issues can occur. You should see a dentist for a follow-up appointment if:
- The symptoms listed in above section do not subside after several days.
- You notice a rusty or unpleasant smell/taste in your nose and throat, indicating an infection
- You feel serious or significant pain and discomfort near the area of root canal treatment.
If you notice these symptoms, there is a good chance that your sinus has been punctured, or that one or more of your teeth are still infected.
